SLEEPING POSITIONS

Most people believe they are doomed (or blessed) to sleep in one position for the rest of their lives. Our bodies typically prefer the position they have chosen since childhood (and for some since the womb), but that doesn’t mean you can’t make changes as an adult.

“Never waste any time you can spend sleeping.”

—Frank H. Knight

I was a side sleeper for decades. My body liked that position, with a fluffy down-filled pillow, so I’m sure you can appreciate my disappointment when much of my sleep training told me sleeping on my back was the ideal position. With time and practice, I came to like sleeping on my back, finding myself waking up less because there was no reason to flip over. My back-sleeping skills were already perfectly timed with recovery from surgery that had me propped up on pillows for weeks. I slept well during that time because I was already an award-winning back sleeper.

After an appointment at an overnight sleep clinic, a few years after switching to sleeping on my back, I was diagnosed with very mild sleep apnea that happened only when I slept on my back. I was told to sleep on my side (a suggestion that made me laugh), so I switched back. I tell you this thrilling but heartbreaking tale to say that sleeping positions aren’t life sentences and encourage you to make a change if your current position isn’t working for you.
